Inspired by monarch butterflies that live and breed on my property at Waiheke, I created this chrysalis shaped piece. It's made from ancient Kauri root timber, featuring all the patterns, cracks, rifts and knots that typify this exotic wood.
The inside of the rifts have been burnt using the yuki sugi technique. Some parts are then painted matte black, others have a bronze verdigris finish worked into the timber.
The outside has been finished with French polish.
