Ovoid 06: Shou Sugi Ban

This ovoid is made from ancient Kauri that lay underground in Northland, New Zealand for many thousands of years.

After turning the ovoid shape, keeping natural voids in place, I’ve used the Japanese ‘shou sugi ban’ burning process to bring out this rich, dark, coffee-coloured look. The piece was then sanded and polished to create the smooth texture. 

This unique piece is a real head-turner, and would add a statement appeal to any space.
