Pacific Voyager is a large two-piece sail-shaped sculpture that has been hand-crafted from a single slab of ancient Kauri sourced from Northland, New Zealand.
These trees were part of magnificent stands of giant Kauri that flourished tens of thousands of years ago, before falling naturally and being preserved in bogs and wetlands.
I saved a lot of this Kauri taonga from burn-off in the 1980’s, after it was dug up by farmers or contractors clearing land for pasture.
Inspired by Aotearoa’s sailing heritage, from discovery through to Team New Zealand’s success in the America’s Cup, I feel this piece pays homage to our collective past, but also steers us onwards into the future.
Designed to be wall hangings or set on bases as free-standing pieces, Pacific Voyager creates an imposing presence, eliciting feelings of movement, progress and mythical travel.
The piece can be further treated if you wanted to place it outdoors. Please contact me to discuss.
